Juventus striker, Moise Keen was racially abused in a match vs Cagliari

It seems to be a never ending cycle, here we are once again crying about racism in football, once again an incident has occurred in Italy. It’s time for this hooliganism to be weeded out of our beautiful game.

A countless number of black footballers have been the subject of racism in the Italian Serie A, the Russian Premier league and other European leagues. Now these are young men just trying to play the game they love at the highest possible level, and what they get in return is abuse and a bunch of idiots that think it should not be a big deal because “these players get paid millions”, as if money exempts you from racism.

You may be asking yourself what has been done about this issue.

Samuel Eto'o once walked off the field due to racial abuse.

There are many parties that have the power to deal with racist behavior from the fans. From the bottom to the top, the clubs, the league, the country’s association, the continent’s governing body and right at the top is FIFA. Up to now, none of these structures have been aggressive in their efforts to protect black players. A few fines here and there, some stadium bans for fans, but nothing too hectic. Racism is not a small issue that requires song and dance to deal with, Organisations like “Kick It Out” are not enough.

Kick It Out is an Organisation aimed at fighting racism in football

So how do we aggressively fight this epidemic? Once again we’ll look at it from the bottom going up.

When a player gets racially abused, he needs to walk off the pitch and all the players from both teams must follow suit, and they must not come back onto the pitch that day. This will result in games having to be rescheduled, creating a fixture backlog and admin nightmare for the league.

That would start a domino effect in action, if teams are walking off the league needs to ban the home team fans from the stadium for no less than 10 games and can go up to a full season for repeat offenders.

Just like apartheid did not end until the sanctions were unbearable for the government, racism in football will not end until the leagues suffer heavy sanctions. If a country has racism issues at their stadiums, suspend all their clubs and their national team from participating in continental competitions. If all of that fails, FIFA must suspend competitive football in those countries and force UEFA to act swiftly and harshly. If clubs start losing revenue due to having to play a full season behind closed doors, they will make more efforts to find the culprits and make sure they are never in a stadium again.

It’s time for the players to support each other, the less said about players like Leonardo Bonucci, the better, he feels Moise Kean was partly responsible for fans racially abusing him. To that I say, Leonardo, football does not need people like you on or off the field.
